Projects featuring Hanson Brick nearly sweep design 2006 brick awards
Distinctive Brick Styles Contributed to Unique, Award-winning Buildings

Columbia, SC., March 20, 2006
Hanson bricks were the premier element in four of six winning projects honored with Design 2006 Brick Awards, illustrating the ability of Hanson products to reflect distinctive styles desired by architects and their clients.

The near sweep by Hanson Brick-affiliated designs at the South Carolina Chapter of the American Institute of Architects Awards Celebration on March 10 shows Hanson’s dedication to offering a diverse product line suited to any architectural vision, according to Hanson Brick’s Cliff Taylor, vice president sales for the east region.

“Architects give voice to their design inspiration through their buildings, and the versatile character and aesthetic appeal of Hanson brick clearly helped to shape that voice,” Taylor said. “We’re proud to be a part of these winning designs, which will be enjoyed by generations to come.”

An independent jury of architects based in Atlanta recognized six designs from a total of 20 entries for these awards. Jurors looked at the “skill and creativeness of the architect or architectural firm designing with brick,” with Honor Awards being the highest award given.

Three Honor Awards recipients featured Hanson Brick: Craig Gaulden Davis Inc. of Greenville, S.C., in conjunction with LS3P ASSOCIATES LTD for the Spring Street Parking Garage in Greenville; Stevens & Wilkinson of Columbia, S.C., in association with Thompson Ventulett Stainback & Associates Inc. for the Columbia Metropolitan Convention Center in Columbia; and Thomas & Denzinger Architects of Charleston, S.C., for the Clemson University Edisto Research Center in Blackville, S.C.

Merit Award-winner Stubbs Muldrow Herin Architects of Mount Pleasant, S.C., also included Hanson Brick in its Pratt-Thomas Gumb Office Building in Charleston.

Jurors found the Spring Street Parking Garage unique and directed praise to the effect of the bricks used in its construction. The architect used the Ashbury Wire Cut, a dark brown brick from Hanson’s Blacksburg, S.C., plant accented by the Medium Grey Wire Cut brick from Hanson’s Columbia 4 plant to create the desired effect.

“Brick masonry in a stacked bond was well used in the vertical piers that both modulate and provide human scale to the facility,” jurors noted.

Jury comments on the Columbia Metropolitan Convention Center also honed in on the use of Red Wire Cut brick, Style 222, from Hanson’s Columbia 4 plant in the structure.

“The jury appreciated the honest, modern design and the straightforward use of brick, particularly considering the existing brick sidewalks and street in the adjacent context,” jurors noted. “The rhythm of the brick buttress-like piers along the front helped break down into human scale the very large façade.”

On reviewing the Clemson University Edisto Research Center, which used Buckingham, a popular brown tumbled brick, and Southbridge, a simulated tumbled red brick, both from Hanson’s Monroe, N.C., plant, jurors found the brick gable forms “nicely proportioned in their variations,” and the jury was also “taken with the pleasing texture of the brick.”

The Merit Award for the Pratt-Thomas Gumb Office Building, which used Edisto brick, Style 552, noted that the “rough textured brick firmly and appropriately anchors the urban character of this successfully designed building.”
